Flood Havoc In Assam And Gujarat: Villages Submerged, Massive Rescue Operations Underway

Assam: In many states of the country, the effect of monsoon is now turning into huge devastation. Due to continuous torrential rains in Assam and Gujarat, the flood situation has become very serious. Life has come to a standstill due to waterlogging in many cities and villages. Administration, army and NDRF teams are working day and night in relief and rescue work so that the affected people can be taken to safe places.

How serious is the situation in Assam?

Due to continuous rains in Assam, many rivers are flowing above the danger mark. Due to this the scope of flood is continuously increasing. So far, 47 people have been confirmed dead, while about 40 people are still missing. 25 districts of the state are affected by floods and lives of more than 10.63 lakh people have been affected by this disaster.

The maximum impact has been seen in Sivasagar district, where about 3.8 lakh people are affected by the floods. About 1.9 lakh people in Charaideo and more than 1.2 lakh people in Jorhat are facing difficult conditions.

What steps has the administration taken so far?

So far 28,912 people have been evacuated to safe places from flood-affected areas. 358 relief camps and assistance centres have been set up in nine districts for relief operations. In these camps, food, drinking water, medicines and other necessary facilities are being provided to more than 24 thousand people.

How much damage has been caused by the flood?

In this disaster, 883 villages have been completely submerged in water. Crops standing on about 25,375 hectares of agricultural land have been destroyed. Both the movement of people and relief work have been affected due to damage to roads, bridges and embankments at many places.

What did Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma say?

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government stands with every affected family and no reduction in relief work will be allowed. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), six people have lost their lives in the last 24 hours. Of these, four deaths have been recorded in Sivasagar and two in Charaideo district.

How did rain increase problems in Gujarat?

Heavy rains in Gujarat for the third consecutive day have worsened the situation in many districts. Waterlogging and flood like situation has occurred in about 250 tehsils including Surat, Navsari, Valsad and Ahmedabad. Road connectivity to many villages was lost, leading to massive rescue operations to bring people to safety.

What is the situation at present?

Relief and rescue operations are continuing in both the states. The administration is delivering essential goods and medical aid to the affected areas. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rain in many areas in the coming days. In such a situation, people have been appealed to remain alert and follow the advice of the local administration.
